The Soldier Summary 50 Marks English
Rupert Brooke in his sonnet, ‘The Soldier‘ describes the feelings of an English soldier who has gone to a foreign country to fight for his country. The poet shows how such a soldier is full of patriotic feelings. He feels that the piece of foreign land or field where he will be buried in case of his death will be forever his own country i.e. England.
The soldier’s feelings are not without logic. He considers the piece of foreign land to be England because he was born and brought up in England and the same body will be lying there. He also expresses his sense of gratitude to his country for everything he got there– the roads, the flowers, the air he breathes, the laughter that he has learnt from friends.
The poet has successfully expressed the feelings of an English soldier. In fact, the feelings of the English soldier have universal tone and appeal. It is a sonnet with a variation in rhyme scheme
