EVERYONE SANG SUMMARY 50 MARKS ENGLISH

Siegfried Sassoon is a celebrated war poet of the 20th century. Since the poet fought during the First war, he witnessed the horrors of war very closely. After the defeat of the Germans and their appeal for armistice, soldiers in general and the poet in particular felt relieved and happy. 

The present poem ‘Everyone Sang’ is composed by Sassoon to express joy after the cessation of war. The poet describes how the soldiers in general celebrated the defeat of Germany which led to their freedom from trenches and battle fields. The feelings of freedom of the soldiers are beautifully described by comparing them with the freedom of birds from cages. Just-as a bird that is set free, moves slowly over orchards and green field and finally soars high enough to disappear, similarly our soldiers feel overwhelmed on their freedom. They burst into laughing, singing and dancing. The poet then feels that the conclusion of war will regenerate peace and beauty in the war ravaged world. The setting sun seems beautiful to the poet because from the ashes will arise a new beautiful world. The poet becomes sentimental and cries out of joy “My heart was shaken with tears”. 

This poem is artistically accomplished one. It has universal appeal. In a poem of only two stanzas the poet has successfully expressed his thoughts and feelings.
